In July 2015, Alex Russel, an engineer at Google Chrome, published the first blog article on the definition of Progressive Web Application (PWA). In it, the author outlined the starting point: web applications can now do almost the same things as native apps, i.e. apps developed for Android or iOS. It would be nice to have universal apps that run on multiple platforms.
The benefits of a progressive web application
Until the birth of PWA, it was natural that mobile apps dominated the market. Mobile technology came, saw, and won: today it is used by nearly 70% of the global population. On the other hand, users are less and less willing to download and install new applications.
With the evolution of internet technology, it has become possible to deliver a mobile app-like experience through web development. The general rules and the habits of web browsing have been unchanged for a long time (e.g. browsing, searching, etc.), while each new mobile app uses a different logic. It's worth cutting the Gordian knot: make your app both mobile-friendly and system-independent!
Why could users turn away from native apps?
Mobile phone memory capacity is finite and mobile apps are getting bigger and bigger. The average users prefer to store their photos, videos, and music on the devices, limiting the available space for adding new apps. Consequently, there is a need for change from the app developers’ perspective.
with one stone
Mobile app developers and procurers are both facing problems. On one hand, app installment is often not a one-click process. The more steps the process requires, the more likely users will quit before the end of the process. The second problem is that individual development is required for both major platforms.
Advantages of the
progressive web application
PWA is built on available and understood web technology such as HTML, CSS animations and web page capabilities. This makes it a responsive interface with fast load times. Like the web, PWA is platform-independent too, requiring only one version to be developed and then rendered on all mobile devices without the need for complex development processes.
A simple and
Companies commissioning development no longer have to adapt to the two main ecosystems. They can bypass the strict rules of Google Play and the Apple App Store and focus on the needs of their users. PWA is also easier to find and promote due to its nature. It can also be integrated into the practice of SEO, or search engine optimization.
The mobile app
Just one click on the company's website. One of the clever things about the progressive web app is that it works like a native mobile app: it installs a small icon on the user's mobile screen. But during launch, it acts as a website and uses less memory on the device.
Update in the
Being a mobile-optimized website, updating it is easier than with traditional applications. Some of its features are available offline, and apps developed with PWA will also appear in Google search results.
One of the security steps of online activities is the use of HTTPS. Fortunately, browsers now require a secure HTTP connection. Applications developed for the web, therefore, ensure reliable transactions.
In any company where users can use both operating systems, it is faster due to platform independence.
The PWA is updated automatically in the background. As no website signals this backend process to the users, nor does the progressive web application.
PWA and improving
the conversion rate
There are several tangible benefits of developing PWAs for businesses, such as the improvement of customer shopping journeys. Progressive Web App can eliminate the reasons for stalling and dropout by:
- shortening the customer journey by bypassing app stores,
- speeding up the loading process and avoiding the risk of dropout due to waiting,
- enabling voice-guided search,
- keeping the user experience consistently high,
- making good use of mobile's potential (e.g. camera, microphone, geolocation, barcode scanning, biometric identification, push notification, etc.),
- adding innovative payment methods to the experience.
The demand for PWAs is growing steadily because of the
fantastic opportunities they offer.
